Here you can find a brief description of the Vapaa Virtaankoski project in English.
Virtaankoski is located in River Tainionvirta in Sysmä municipality. The river is about 37 kilomiters long and it falls from Lake Nuoramois to Lake Päijänne. River Tainionvirta is one of the most significant spawning grounds for endangered trout of Lake Päijänne and whitefish.
The main goal of this project is to free River Tainonvirta’s dam called Virtaankoski. This will be done by planning and starting a change process in which the former power plant is transformed to an area for recreational and museum usage. The dam of the power plant will be dismantled and replaced with a new dam which will allow the fish to freely move in the white water of the Virtaankoski.
